Besshatyr Mounds

Besshatyr Mounds

Explore the ancient grand Saka royal tombs rising from the steppe, still echoing the spirit of nomads from 2,500 years ago

Besshatyr is an ancient necropolis of the Saka Tigrahauda, Eastern Scythian nomads who lived in this region in the 6th–4th centuries BC. Spanning 2 km², the complex includes 31 burial mounds of varying sizes, built for tribal leaders, warriors, and nobles. The largest mound is 17 meters high and 105 meters across. Some tombs contain wooden chambers made from Tien Shan spruce, brought from 250 km away. Besshatyr offers valuable insights into the Saka culture and burial traditions
