The Kokkala Gorge
Kokkala, known for its rugged cliffs and endless horizons. Here, the desert comes alive: you may even encounter grazing camels wandering close by.
The Kokkala Gorge (sometimes spelled Kokala) is a small gorge with bizarre, vibrant cliffs, where multicolored layers of limestone, clay, and ancient sediments are intermingled. Scientists have determined that this rock formation dates back to the Jurassic period. The name itself means "Blue Fortress" or "Blue Mountain."
Although dinosaur bones and teeth cannot be found here, one can trace the history of geological eras. Dark layers in the rocks are traces of Jurassic-era plants. Scientists have determined that the remains of the ancient forest are 170-200 million years old.
